I've been lucky to have had several assignments to the oil-rich state of Oman in the Middle East. The first time I went there, it certainly wasn't what I expected it be. For one thing, it wasn't hot all the time, like Singapore is, and it can be downright freezing-cold in the desert. The people were friendly and a large percentage of the population in Muscat, the capital, were fairly liberal. In addition, as a woman, I didn't need to cover myself my head to toe.
I guess I would call it "culture shock", but of the nice kind. Coming from the concrete jungle of Singapore, I was awed by the amount of land and space and the "oldness" (historically) of some of the forts and monuments. Oman is one country where I have really felt history come alive.

Down south in Salalah, the people are a little more reserved, as they don't get that many foreign tourists. But it's true...a smile works wonders!

| One last thing :
if you're ever in Oman, watch out for those speedy camels! |
